Students Celebrate International Women’s Day
Barton Peveril students are celebrating International Women’s Day, with a series of talks from leading women in a range of industries. Southampton Football Club’s General Manager for Girls’ and Women’s Football, Martina Heath, and Caroline Nokes MP were among the guest speakers on the day.
The day was planned and organised by a group of Barton Peveril Student Ambassadors. The Student Ambassadors were former Bitterne Park School pupils Martyna Pleszka, Tak Rayhan, Adam Yang, Tom Batterson and Luke Kennedy, Oasis Academy: Mayfield’s former pupil Hannah Farnell, previous Bay House School pupil Isobel Heer, former Swanmore College of Technology pupil Elena Jobson, two The Romsey School former pupils Abbie Miller and Morgan Pearce, and former Upper Shirley High School pupil Dee Sahiti.
Guest Speakers
Martina Heath, from Southampton Football Club, spoke to students about women in sport.
University of Southampton Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Stefany Kissovsky, Software Engineer at Critical Software Zinzile Sibande, and Barton Peveril Teacher of Mathematics Amanda Kennedy held a Question and Answer panel to discuss women in STEM.
Anna Feuchtwang spoke about her role as CEO of the National Children’s Bureau.
The Barton Peveril students who organised the day gave a talk on supporting gender equality in the workplace. Caroline Nokes MP for Romsey and Southampton North spoke to students about life as a woman in Westminster.

Speaking on the day, Student Progress Coordinator Sophie Maddocks said: “
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements; to remember those women who have fought tirelessly throughout history to secure equal rights; and to advocate for gender equality in our own college community. This year, a mixed-gender group of student organisers has devised and planned an International Women’s Day celebration that will benefit all students, with speakers from the worlds of Sport, STEM, Politics, and Social Science. We’re glad students and staff joined us in learning how everyone can support gender equality in College and beyond!”
Barton Peveril Student Ambassador Morgan Pearce also praised the day:
“I thoroughly enjoyed planning the event and am so please with the turnout. It was amazing to see so many fantastic speakers and I want to thank everyone that came to any one of the talks.”
