Barton Peveril Sixth Form College student Phillip Smith has been selected to represent Team GB in the 2022 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships on 11th – 14th August 2022 in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic.
Smith, who previously attended Thornden School, also represented Team GB in the 2022 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Ivrea, Italy between 5th and 10th July 2022.
The Barton Peveril student benefits from the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme at the College, which enables him to represent Winchester Canoe Club, Team GB, and study at the highest level at the same time.
Smith qualified for Team GB at a selection race earlier in the year where he placed 2nd amongst other junior canoers from across the United Kingdom. This is the latest achievement in Smith’s sporting career, after a series of successes in Premier Races across the country.

Speaking on his achievement, Barton Peveril Sixth Form College student, Phillip Smith, said:
‘I’m really happy to secure my place on the junior GB team. This season my aim is getting on the podium internationally to get a medal for myself. This is the next big step for me.’
