Barton Peveril Support Restart a Heart Day 2019
Barton Peveril students welcomed South Central Ambulance Service and NHS Pathways to College as they learned how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for global Restart a Heart Day, on Wednesday 16th October 2019. A number of students from across the College attended the three sessions, which were delivered by the representatives from Hampshire’s Emergency Services who regularly help those suffering with Cardiac Arrest and Heart Attacks.
Students had practical experience with Resuscitation Manikins, learning and practicing how to deliver CPR so they can potentially save lives in the future. Restart a Heart Day is an initiative backed by the British Heart Foundation, to increase survival rates of those suffering Cardiac Arrests and Heart Attacks; using CPR whilst waiting for an ambulance can at least double a person’s chance of survival.
“Life saving skill”
College Nurse Shelley Hughes, who organised these sessions in College, said:
“We are very grateful to the British Heart Foundation for organising this fantastic initiative, and to the Emergency Services for giving up their valuable time to teach our students who were keen to learn how to administer these life-saving skills.”
Paul Bullen, NHS Pathways Trainer, spoke about the importance of sessions like these:
“Restart a Heart Day is an international day of action. With the help of the British Heart Foundation and Ambulance Services, we aim to train over 200,000 people in schools, colleges and in the community.
“Today we have been showing students at Barton Peveril vital, hands only CPR, which is a valuable life saving skill that will benefit the entire community.”
For The Hamble School pupil Ilyssa Alagon, who attended one of the training sessions, commented on the event:
“This is very useful to learn at an early age. It is a necessity for every single person.”
