A former Barton Peveril student has received a prize for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Andrew Chard (21) was one of the winners of the Leslie Jones Memorial Prize awarded to Oxford Brookes School of Architecture BA undergraduates for the most progress in built construction by the Oxfordshire branch of RIBA.
Judges were impressed with Andrew’s ideas and designs for Piraeus – the port of Athens – where many people arrive but few stop and visit. Andrew proposed having former ships reconstructed at the port to enable the public to see shipbuilding processes. The completed ships would then sail around the surrounding islands and the other ports of Athens, promoting tourism in Piraeus.
Andrew attended Brookfield Community School before heading to Barton Peveril College where he studied Maths, Physics, Graphics and the Extended Project. In his first year at Oxford Brookes he was awarded the Oxfordshire Prize for the best portfolio of a first year architecture student by the same branch of RIBA which represents more than 600 architects across the county.
Andrew has just completed his three year Part 1 course towards qualifying as an architect, which in the United Kingdom takes at least seven years. The next stage is a year out, working in a London-based architectural practice.
