College Moves To Google Cloud Platform in Partnership with SoftwareOne

Today, Barton Peveril Sixth Form College announced that it will be migrating its entire on-site server infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), working in strategic partnership with both Google and SoftwareOne, a leading global provider of end-to-end software and cloud technology solutions. This move will enhance security, support innovation and deliver significant cost savings

The college’s existing, aging server infrastructure faced increasing challenges, including costly replacements, and limited scalability to meet the growing demands of digital initiatives. Furthermore, managing these servers consumed valuable IT staff time that could be better allocated to strategic projects.

By moving to Google Cloud Platform, Barton Peveril will benefit from:

  • Enhanced Security
  • Improved Scalability
  • Significant Cost Savings
  • Freed Up IT Resources
  • Reliable Access
  • Improved Performance

SoftwareOne, a Google Premier Partner with extensive GCP experience, will work alongside the college’s IT team, providing project management, handling key technical execution tasks, and offering six months of post-migration support.

Chris Loveday, Vice Principal (Business Services) at Barton Peveril, stated:

Moving to the cloud was essential in enhancing our cybersecurity and protecting our data. The fact that the move represents a significant saving only made the decision easier. This migration to GCP is a key milestone in Barton Peveril’s Digital Strategy. We need to invest in supporting the migration so that it can be delivered in time but more importantly, without hindering/impacting operations.”

The move to GCP includes seamless integration with Google’s existing education ecosystem like Chrome OS and Google Workspace, and APIs designed for education platforms. The migration is carefully planned to minimise disruption, with key activities scheduled during off-peak hours.

The migration project is estimated to take approximately 13 weeks for the pre-migration phase and 2 weeks for the migration phase, followed by a 6-month post-migration hypercare period. Barton Peveril’s proactive approach to modernising its IT infrastructure with GCP and SoftwareOne sets a benchmark for educational institutions seeking to enhance their digital capabilities and provide an optimal learning environment.
