Barton Peveril Sixth Form College students have completed the Group Project in Interdisciplinary Learning by its third cohort of Year 2 students in collaboration with the University of Winchester.
This ten-week programme challenges students to research diverse topics, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and presentation skills. The students’ projects culminated in insightful presentations delivered to a panel of academics from both institutions: University Pro Vice-Chancellor Sam Jones, Deputy Principal Nicola Carcone and Director of Science Nathan Cheung.
Student teams demonstrated curiosity about the following:
Social Influence on Fashion: A third team analysed the impact of social factors on fashion trends, tracing the evolution of style and the role of celebrity influence throughout history.
The Influence of Marketing on Dietary Choices: One team explored how packaging, advertising, and marketing can influence consumer perceptions and food choices, highlighting the power of visual cues and language in shaping dietary habits.
Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Another team examined Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) involvement in healthcare and the advantages and disadvantages of its use.
Deputy Principal Nicola Carcone commented:
Interdisciplinary Learning demands that students step outside the curriculum, and, through the process, they really learn the art and the value of teamwork. They are now university and career ready. The presentations this year were incredibly interesting, so much so that the discussions continued beyond the allotted time. We are proud of our students and the academics they are becoming.

Sam Jones responds to the students’ presentations:
You didn’t shy away from some challenging subjects, which is a testament to the programme’s qualities and your learning at Barton Peveril. Higher Education is all about asking the big questions, and this programme is a great way of preparing for that.
