Alumna Lucy Russell has completed her degree at the University of London Institue in Paris, France, with a First Class Honours in French Studies, including Climate Politics and Critical Theory modules.
The former Swanmore student completed her studies at Barton Peveril in 2022, studying English Language, French and Law. While at the College, Lucy developed a strong foundation in French language and culture.
Lucy says:
Living in Paris has been such a great experience! It’s such a vibrant city with so much to explore and appreciate. I have met so many people worldwide and speak French every day. Some particular highlights would be seeing the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower for Bastille Day, picnics on the Seine in the summer and the university balls at the end of every year.
So many unique experiences and impacts have been drawn from moving to Paris at 18! I’ve gained self-confidence and become so much more independent. Paris is very well connected, so I’ve had the opportunity to travel and explore other European cities during my time here. My French has progressed so much since I was here because I have been surrounded by the language, which is one of the best ways to learn. I’ve been waitressing in Paris for the last 18 months, where I’ve gained hospitality and customer service experience amongst a francophone team. These are skills I will carry forward into future employment. I also think my international experience offers something unique to my CV when applying for jobs now.
I enjoyed studying French at Barton – Dominique was such an enthusiastic teacher, so friendly whilst also pushing us to work hard. Our whole class also got on so well, so there was always such a good atmosphere, and I met some of my best friends in that class!
Lucy’s experience highlights the benefits of international education and the opportunities available to Barton Peveril students. Her story serves as an inspiration to current students who are considering pursuing their studies abroad.
