In September, 27 students from Barton Peveril took part in the Mathematical Competition for Girls, and a further four students took part in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls.
Both the Mathematical Competition for Girls and Mathematical Olympiad for Girls are run annually by The UK Maths Trust (UKMT) to challenge and inspire talented young mathematicians across the country.

The students gained excellent results in the Mathematical Competition for Girls. 12 students earned a Distinction, including Holly Gent, who achieved a perfect score of 50 out of 50 – an outstanding accomplishment, placing her first in the country.
Two students achieved a Distinction in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls, with Hannah Leary scoring an impressive 48 out of 50. As a result, she received a book prize as well as being ranked within the top 30 in the country.
Chris Palmer, Subject Leader for Further Mathematics, said:
“It’s been really great to see so many girls taking part in the Competition this year. For the first time, we have been running a problem solving club for girls, which has been very successful. They have had a lot of fun in the warm up sessions, tackling tricky questions together, and they have really become more confident in their problem solving skills. Hannah and Holly have done especially well in the Olympiad and Competition respectively, and the first year students are already looking forward to taking part again next year“

As part of the Q-XTRA programme at the college, The Maths Olympiad enrichment runs for one session every week, focusing on proof, presentation and problem solving skills whilst working collaboratively in a team.
The College congratulates all participants on their incredible achievements. We also commend the Mathematics Department for its continued encouragement and support in enhancing students’ enthusiasm for the subject, and providing them with additional opportunities to further their learning.
