Barton Peveril College student, Megan Long, spent time over the summer volunteering with the YMCA Fairthorne Group, gaining valuable hands-on experience in marketing and photography. Megan currently studies Business, Media studies and Environmental Science at Barton Peveril, and is looking to pursue a career within Marketing.
Supported by Barton Peveril’s Careers Team, Megan was able to work alongside the YMCA’s marketing department to capture and share the organisation’s vibrant community life — from day camps to holiday club events.
During her placement, Megan photographed a range of activities, including abseiling, fire lighting, and paddleboarding, before learning how to edit and upload her work to the YMCA website. Megan also got to write and publish her own press release about her placement experience on the YMCA Fairthorne Group’s news page.
Reflecting on her time there, Megan, formerly of Wildern School commentented, “Volunteering at YMCA Fairthorne Group has been a blast and I would happily come back. Everyone has been so patient and encouraging. My biggest takeaway is that teamwork is everything – at YMCA everyone looks out for each other, and that’s what makes it so special.”
This experience not only helped Megan develop new skills in marketing and communications but also deepened her understanding of the value of volunteering in the local community.
