Professor Joy Watts Inspires Future Scientists

Professor Joy Watts from the University of Portsmouth gave a talk on Tuesday 12th November, on microbiology, virology, and pandemics at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College.

Professor Watts, whose research focuses on applying molecular tools to understand microbial diversity and interactions, shared her expertise on microbes, viruses, and the impact of pandemics with students interested in pursuing biology, medicine or biomedical science at university level.

Professor Watts has active expert panel roles for the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme and is an editorial board member for journals, including Nature Scientific Reports. She is also the Editor-in-Chief for Environmental Microbiome and an advisor for the Marine Microbiome Policy Report, with a funding track record from the European Commission, NERC, and Innovate UK.

The talk offered students potential discussion points for university interviews or an extended project qualification, as well as inspiration for future career paths.
