Remembering The Holocaust

The Holocaust Memorial Day, observed on the 27th January, commemorates the victims of the Holocaust during World War II. It is a day to remember and reflect upon the atrocities committed and to honour the millions of lives who have suffered and lost their lives.

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College recently marked Holocaust Memorial Day with an event created to educate students. The event, led by experts from the Parkes Institute, provided Humanities students with valuable insights into the history and impact of the Holocaust.

The event began with an insightful lecture on Jewish Life in Europe Before The Holocaust by Professor Clare Le Foll, Professor of East European Jewish History and Culture at Park Institute.

The event consisted of the following workshops:

  • A Place of Refuge: Exhibition and Discussion by Neil Gregor, Director of Parkes Institute and Professor of Modern European History at the University of Southampton.
  • Film and Holocaust by Doctor Emily-Rose Baker and Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
  • The Language of the Holocaust, Genocide and Totalitarianism by Charlie Knight, a doctoral researcher at the Parkes Institute and Fellow at the Leo Baeck Institue London.
  • The Lives of Male Prisoners in the Auschwitz Sonderkommando by Maddie Walch, a doctoral researcher and outreach Fellow at the Parkes Institute.

How Should We Memorialise The Holocaust As We Get Further Away From It? By Graham Cole, an Honorary Fellow at the Parkes Institute and Educator for the Holocaust Education Trust.

The day concluded with a memorial service led by Danny Habel, a trustee at the Licoricia of Winchester Appeal and an active contributor to various charitable causes, including the Anne Frank Educational Trust. Barton Peveril students who visited Auschwitz last November shared their experiences through a presentation, reflecting on the importance of the Holocaust.
