What’s the Big Idea?

What’s the Big Idea? returned to Barton Peveril for its fourth year, with students pitching their business ideas to a panel of industry experts.

The competition allowed the college’s entrepreneurial students to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges, win a monetary prize, and receive a mentorship opportunity. The students who participated had either already established their own businesses or had business concepts that needed a financial kick-start to get them off the ground. They attended a ‘Pitching Bootcamp’ to hone their pitching skills before the competition.

Donna Bennett, Teacher of Business and Extended Project Coordinator and organiser of the event, said:

“The ‘What’s the Big Idea’ competition has been an incredible journey for our Year 2 students. Witnessing their creativity, resilience, and problem-solving skills blossom has been truly inspiring. They’ve not only developed innovative business concepts but also gained invaluable experience in pitching, marketing, and financial planning. This competition has equipped them with essential skills for future success, whether they pursue entrepreneurship or any other career path.”

Participating in What’s the Big Idea? was an incredible experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow. Winning with my idea, cool windows, was amazing, but what made it special was seeing all the other creative ideas put forward. Everyone brought something unique to the table, which was a true testament to the talent and kindness in our college community

Jacob Tew – Cool Windows, Winner.

It was a great learning experience, and I would love to participate again. I’m excited to see next year’s submissions!

Simona Liangovska – Indri Illustrations, Runner Up.

What’s the Big Idea? has boosted my confidence in my makeup skills; before this, I was still nervous about charging for my services because of my lack of professional training, but the panel’s comments helped me take that next step. Thank you to everyone involved.

Sammy Clarke – Final Girl Glam, Best Pitch

Students were inspired by a panel of accomplished entrepreneurs, including software startup investor Robin Sharpe, Google’s Felix Mohanoran, author Jodie Goodchild (The LinkedIn Revolution), and Startup Grind’s Christopher Amedu. The panel also featured Barton Peveril alumnus Teo Smith, founder of Spotlight Video.
